1990 coupe + my toyotas

Postby nickel » April 11th, 2013, 6:38 am

i had a thread on the old site for my car but never made a new one - i was cleaning up old pictures on my computer and found lots of my jetta so i thought i'd post them up in the spirit of getting ready for spring.

it nothing special i have done a couple of 8v motor swaps and mostly maintenance stuff and some little upgrades, but its a nice little car and one day when i have the time and money it will be fully restored im sure. i learn everything from the internet and have no mech experience other than tinkering around in the garage so i;m pretty proud of my coupe heh

the drive home from arrowwood AB with a bad clutch and o2 sensor. made it..

replaced the o2, and pulled the engine and trans because the clutch completely went and the gears were no good anymore. traded an old set of suspension for a 2.0l 8v with a good trans attached - my first engine swap had help from a buddy and learned alot. we kept the 1.8l head and used the aba block and trans, chopped the stock aba exhaust mani and used the dual downpipe as well as my old mk2s exhaust, put in an aftermarket cam and used TT parts for the distributor and breather block-off. you can see the height difference with the aba block with the throttle body closer to the raintray

driving around with buddy's old gli, this car got around a bit i think
Image

drove the 1.8/2.0 combo for about a year till it started burning tons of oil and had to go. i had 13" bbs mahles on 50series sumitomos for a while too
Image

bought an 87 coupe of newf and pulled the 8v block and a bunch of other stuff for my car and parted the rest out. put in some new seals, gaskets, etc new clutch PP and lightened flywheel, redid all transmission seals and flushed gear oil and pushrod release bearing stuff, pulled the CIS head and had my digi2 head completely rebuilt, new headgasket, new inner and outer tierods with a power steering loop at the rack (love this), new starter and brass bushing, and tadaaa, fresh 8v that doesn;t blow smoke rings.

also did shifter bushing replacement, window regulators and seals, put in some better shape roof gutters, and battery grounds

single rounds and a day of autocross, most fun ive ever had driving gotta do it again

had the windshield out, took it down to bare metal and reprayed with colormatch from a spray can
Image

new front rotors and pads, rebuilt calipers, new soft lines, rebuilt rear drums and rear wheel bearings, full fluid flush
Image
Image

handsanded and refinished these sebrings to replace my terribly crubbed estorils that i got for a good deal and re-blackened trim
Image
Image

and finally last week i replaced the pedal cluster, cracked dashboard, and shot odometer/speedo (new one has metal gears instead of plastic which is great), as well as a leather wrapped steering wheel (real leather feels so nice!) got the wheel from a buddy wilco in holland whos car was recently featured in PVW verrrry cool and awesome guys. this is wilco and his friend michel who kindly picked me up in amsterdam and gave me a tour
