1957 Beetle - WRX Swap

Postby NotoriousNRB » November 24th, 2014, 6:07 pm

With the Karmann Ghia pretty well done it's time to get on to the next build.

Let's start with the '93 Subaru impreza. It had an '04 WRX drive train swapped in it but thats about all it had going for it and that's why it was aquired.

Lets move to some photos.

The only thing needed was the Engine and with the engine out, it's time to introduce you to the old man.

The day after we picked up the car Calgary got a dumping of snow.

We got the bug in the shop and let it thaw out a bit.

No need to think too much right now... time to get to work!

Update!

Part of the reason we haven't been making much progress as of late is because we are waiting for vital parts to come in. Trans axle and suspensions bits are needed to figure out the ride height.

But it hasnt been only the parts that has been keeping us from moving forward on the Oval, its also because of a 1976 Super Beetle resto job that we need to finish. Thanksfully we have finished the body work and now it is ready to go for paint. So with the Super Beetle technically out of the way, we can move back on to the floor pan of the Oval.

Image

Lets proceed to the photos.

First order in business is to start cutting. So cut we did.

We are tubbing the rear so we don't where the wheels will be until we get the Transaxle in our hands. We are cutting things that we know will be in the way.

We also prepped the frame horns for the Punch Drunk Customs rear suspension bits
Image

Next to go is the floor pan sections. The pan needs to be flat...

The great part of this pan is that the steel is soooo damn good! If we cared about what the purists thought, it would have been difficult to cut into such a solid pan!

We will be making new pan sections soon.

Update.

We last left off cutting the old rear floor sections out to make room for the new flat sections!

We went to a friends shop to roll some beads into the new sections.

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

After the sections were rolled, it was time to put them on the pan.

Image

Image

I wanted to see how strong the beads made the sections... This was before they were welded in. I was impressed!

Image

Jesse started welding.

Image

Image

Image

Image

With the sections in, it was time to remove the stock jack points. They were keeping the pan from laying on the ground.

Image

Image

Image

and now the pan is on the ground. The frame head is keeping the front of the pan up at the moment. we arent concerned though. acouple drag sessions and itll make itself flat!

Image

It is from this point we will add the suspension bits, when we get them.

Image

Hopefully these parts show up at the border soon!!!

Bad ass. I like the progress and the photos. I see your collection of beetles in the front of your house when I take a ride on the LRT :P
