2-Piece wheel noob questions

Postby gnavs » March 15th, 2014, 12:11 am

So I picked up a set of 2-piece Ronal LZ's for the Saab and I'd like to touch up the peeling chrome on the lips. I can't justify $400 to get the chrome removed professionally so my plan is to wire brush the flaking bits and get the lips ready for a DIY paint job.
My question is, can I remove the centres so I can attack the barrels all while keeping tires installed or do I have to get the tires pulled off?

I have only rebuilt 3 piece wheels, but i'd imagine 2 piece aren't much different. You shouldn't have to remove the tires, just take all the air out of the tires. Sometimes the face is welded to the barrel on wheels, giving the illusion of 2 piece. Are they detachable?

I'm pretty sure they're actual 2 piece but I guess I'll find out for sure when I try to take the face off.
I'll deflate the tires and see what happens. Thanks.

I could be wrong but I think I read somewhere that without the faces you run the risk of bending the barrel, especially if you accidentally drop one. I can't imagine much of a problem if they're deflated and are handled carefully though.

I think careful handling is pretty key here ;)
I'm gonna give it a go and see what happens. Say I do bend a barrel, is that typically repairable?

I'm sure AB Wheel could repair it but you should call tirebob and ask him before you attempt. I'm sure he'd know best. (403) 769-1771

You will be fine, I don't see how it would bend with no air in the tires.

I talked with Alberta Wheel Repair and since the chrome is peeling they told me I'd be better off getting it chemically removed. Since I'm cheap and don't feel like spending $400 my plan is to disassemble and sand down the peeling bits to prep for paint. I figure if I use a good self-etching primer I should be able to make it work.

Next question. In the event I snap a wheel screw where would I source new ones? Seems Tunershop has BBS parts which look similar to mine but I'm not sure if I need Ronal specific ones.

You'll be fine ordering from Tunershop, just get the pitch and length right (Obviously). Hopefully Ronal doesn't use loctite on assembly, that makes it a little more unenjoyable. Although, i'd recommend using a dab of blue loctite on each bolt when you reassemble.

If your unsure, you can always take a bolt into Mark at Tunerworks and he can order the right ones up. He has done a few rim bolt orders.

Sweet. Thanks!
I need to get a 12 point socket set before I try taking the bolts off. I'm hoping there's no loctite, that shit always makes things difficult.
