Need advice on MkIV Jetta wheel sizing

Postby resolute » September 11th, 2012, 12:35 am

I have a plain MkIV Jetta 2.0 on stock steelies 15x6 ET38 with 195 65 tires.
I'm thinking of getting alloys that only come in 15x7 ET42. They are marketed as being suitable for MkIVs.
So, first question: is there enough space that the 4mm additional offset will clear the brakes OK?

I want to put 205 60R15 tires on the rims, because 195s are a bit narrow for 7" wheels. With the 205s I get the following:
Tire & wheel inboard increase 0.85 inches.
Tire and wheel outboard increase 0.54 inches.
So, second question: is there enough clearance that I won't have rubbing issues? I'm a bit concerned that the inner edge of the tire will be almost an inch closer in to the suspension and wheel well.

I'm just being cautious, because I can't return the wheels if they're wrong.

Thanks for any advice.

So that would mean I have to buy longer bolts, right? Can those be found with the rounded seats?

OK, thanks. I'm really hoping not to have to go to spacers, hubcentric adapters and new bolts. I'll have to get under the wheel arch and see how much clearance there is now. I just thought someone might know if there's lots of room for an inboard increase of 0.85 inches. I'm new at this.
