Cabrio running out of fuel

Postby mcrow » September 16th, 2014, 10:20 pm

Engine is a OBD1 VR6 turbo. I have been noticing lately that the cabrio has been running out of fuel while boosting at speeds greater than 120ish km/h. There is no problems hitting full boost at speeds lower than 100 km/h. The car will jerk, not have great power, AF gauge goes full lean, but the boost stays at 20 psi. The car has 36lb/hr injectors and stock fuel pump.

Could the fuel pump just be getting weak or should I look at investing in a inline fuel pump? There is no fuel adjust-ability, it's a pre programmed C2 software,

Definitely sounds fuel related. Is there any way to watch or log your fuel pressure when this happens? I'm assuming you're holding full boost for a longer time when you're doing 100+ than burst acceleration?

Can you hear the pump before starting the car? Is it starting to sound different?

Is this a new issue? Or has it always been this way? If its recently just started then I would say there's nothing wrong with the way your current setup is setup, and most likely your fuel pump could be getting weak. Although it could be getting weak because it is overworking from it's stock application. If it's always been this way then you may want to change your fuel delivery to the fuel rail. I would definitely keep an eye on your fuel pressure when that is happening... leaning out is not a good thing! By your symptoms it sounds like you're not getting enough fuel when that's happening. You may also have leaky injectors.

I'm no turbo expert but judging by your AF ratio and other upgrades, your fuel pump looks like the weakest link. I would consider the Bosch HPFP, I hear they're better than the Walbro and will supply up to 270 LPH as opposed to Walbro's 255 LPH.

Seems like a pretty new issue. I usually don't do fast 5th gear pulls, I like my license. But I do remember doing a few 110 to 160 km/h pulls on the way to FFH with no issues. The fuel pump might just be getting tired. 350ish HP is a lot to ask out of a stock fuel pump.

Going to install an inline Walboro 255 lph fuel pump this spring, and hopefully it will make magic happen. Along with a short runner intake. This car is going to be a rocket.
